Reading List and Resources for Analog Photographers

Edward Weston - Ansel Adams with Contax Camera

So you're finding yourself getting intrigued with this whole analog/film photography thing and you're thinking to yourself - where can I learn more about this stuff? Well, you're in luck because this blog post is completely dedicated to helping you get up to speed with a categorized list of resources to enhance your understanding of film photography. I'll be updating this periodically as I find more/better resources.

I'm going to concentrate on the technical resources on this post and reserve another post for artistic sites.

Technical Books:

Beginners Guides:

Ansel Adams:

The Camera
The Negative
The Print

You will not be disappointed picking up these three books. They have changed many generations way of seeing and developing their B&W film. I'd suggest grabbing, The Negative immediately and reading through it. It's short and sweet and absolutely packed with information with an introduction to the Zone System (another topic I'll cover) method of making a good negative.

Bryan Peterson:

Bryan Peterson has a great book on understanding the fundamentals of exposure (ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed).

Steve Anchell

The Darkroom Cookbook
The Film Developing Cookbook

Steve's books give you a great technical foundation to start processing your own film,  building a darkroom and understanding what developers, stop baths and fixing baths do.  He even gives recipes to help you create your own developer. I absolutely love The Darkroom Cookbook as it has been my trusted companion for over a decade now.

Aperture Press Books

Core Curriculum
Crisis Of The Real
Photography After Frank
Inside The Photograph

Andreas Feininger, The Photojournalist [Dennis Stock], 1951
